Mobile internet and broadband services suspended from March 7 to 16 in West Bengal

Mobile and broadband internet services in West Bengal will remain temporarily suspended for the next few days.

According to the state government order, internet services will be suspended in few blocks in Malda, Murshidabad, Uttar Dinajpur, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Birbhum and Darjeeling districts to prevent illegal activities. Services will remain suspended between 11 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on March 7-9, March 11-12 and March 14-16, news agency ANI reported.

The Additional Chief Secretary of West Bengal, in an official order, said that intelligence reports have been received that internet transmissions and voice over internet telephony may be used for illegal activities in some areas in the coming days .

“Intelligence reports have been received that Internet transmissions and voice over Internet telephony may be used for illegal activities in certain areas within the next few days…Review of the information received gives reason to believe that such illegal activities are likely to occur in the absence of preventive measures,” the order reads.

“Any data-related message or class of messages to or from any person or class of persons relating to a particular subject, brought for transmission by or transmitted or received by any telegraph under the India Telegraph Act, 1885, should temporarily not be transmitted in the interest of maintaining public order and preventing incitement to the commission of any offense within the jurisdiction of the police blocks/stations listed in the annex,” it added. ‘order.
